What is an access code and how can it reduce your telephone bill?

Telecommunication companies by nature of the industry have large infrastructures and it is in their interests to ensure they are well maintained and used. Corporate giants like British Telecom and others have redundant capacity this  is often made available to smaller companies who can guarantee a certain amount of usage; in this way their resources and investment is not wasted, after all the best way to test a circuit is to use it. 

There are various way's in which the network cores can be utilised be it Internet access or for cheap phone calls. To access this core network access numbers are allocated, they can be short with a few digits, or a telephone number which presents dial tone or acts as a discount prefix this method is known as call by call routing. They can also be automatic assigned at the telephone exchange and this is known as pre-selection, both methods have their advantages and disadvantages.

Pre-selection has the advantage that calls can be very cheap, that there is no code to remember but has the disadvantage that sometimes a contract is needed, that some instances will result in a second bill (from the pre-selection company) or that there can be quality issues, and if this is a problem you either have no way to override it or you need to enter an access code to by pass it, other disadvantages can include that some calls cannot be routed and some may even cost more, having said that many private consumers and businesses regularly use pre-selection.

Call by call routing has the advantage that you are in control, you should in theory know how much a call costs (this may vary from network to network), if the quality is poor you can hangup and not use the code again simply select another provider. There are other methods of reducing call costs including phone-cards, callback solutions, and even switching provider, some of these are discussed elsewhere within our site.
