Europe
In Europe, Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) satellite services are found mainly on Astra satellites and Hotbird (operated by Eutelsat.) BSkyB (known as Sky) serves the UK. SKY Italia, Canal Digitaal and UPC being the main providers in Italy, the Netherlands and Central Europe.
To receive the direct broadcasts, the customer needs a suitable sized and positioned / aligned dish, and of course a digital satellite receiver.

To be able to receive the signals you must be inside what is known as the footprint. The footprint of a satellite is the ground area that its transponders (transmitters) offer coverage, and determines the satellite dish diameter required to receive each transponder's signal. There is usually a different map for each transponder (or group of transponders) as each may be aimed to cover different areas of the ground.

As you get towards the edge of the footprint the signal strength received by the dish falls the size of the dish should be such that the received signal level at the receiver (STB) is higher than the threshold which is the minimum level required to process a stable picture.

If you go beyond the official publicised footprints of the satellite operator, you may find that you need massive dishes to pick up the signals if at all. Obviously you cannot receive signals from a satellite which is below the horizon. Receiving signals on the edge of satellite footprints is often referred to as fringe reception.

Astra 2D
Astra 2D carries many Free to Air Broadcasts from the UK including BBC and ITV channels.

We have a footprint map compiled for reception of Astra 2D in Spain, Germany, and a generalised one for Europe and North Africa, edge of middle East.

Nilesat
Nilesat carries Arabic language programming and content aimed at the middle East, it is however popular with expats, not least because it carries showtime (the pay channel service) but also because it has several Free to Air channels which carry English language. Nilesat is easy to receive on the Costa Del Sol and Costa Blanca of Spain. Nilesat showtime channels have excellent football coverage rights.
